FILM PRODUCTION

BECOME A FILMMAKER

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

You will explore the history of film and become familiar with industry innovators, milestones, and technology. You will learn how to read, track and predict trends.

You will be taught how to work with clients on projects with a promotional aspect, and pitch and produce a PSA, commercial, music video, and more.

You will learn how to create animated graphic designs, title sequences, lower thirds, and environmental effects such as rain, lightning, and smoke.

You will be trained on how to prep for your own productions, including crewing, location scouting, permits, insurance, shot lists, equipment needs, and more.

You will learn how to create non-fiction programming, including the development of episode structure, how to cast personalities, and the proper managing of budgets.

You will become versed in the various approaches to factual storytelling, and as part of a group—produce your own documentary.

You will be introduced to producing and directing techniques, as well as be provided with an in-depth look at the three phases of production: pre-production, production, and post-production.   

You will learn visual storytelling, workflow and software, and put into practice various editing techniques that professional editors use today.  

You will be taught lighting set ups, practice techniques on industry-standard cameras, and learn focus pulling, depth of field, the use of colour gels, and more.   

You will be trained how to properly record audio, conduct location sound, add or create sound effects, add musical scores, replace dialogue, contract music licensing, and more.  

You will become versed in set etiquette, safety procedures, and how to properly assemble and pack camera equipment for location shooting.  

You will learn about clearances and copyright as it pertains to videos, music, intellectual property and brands.   

You will be introduced to the terminology and types of funding available for productions, including tax incentives and grants.   

You will develop an understanding of the sales process for film and TV as it relates to domestic and global marketplaces, including how to create one sheets, sales forecasts, and a marketing plan. 

You will learn the art of packaging and presenting your proposals, so that your concepts and screenplays can be greenlit for production.  

You will be taught the strategies for self-promotion upon graduation. You will learn interview skills, portfolio development and how to form your own production company.

Andrew Barnsley

President

Toronto Film School President Andrew Barnsley is one of Canada’s most celebrated television producers, with an Emmy, a Golden Globe and six Canadian Screen Awards to his name. As CEO of Project 10 Productions, a Toronto and Los Angeles-based production company, he continues to dedicate his career to sharing Canadian stories with the world. Barnsley has spent the last 20+ years producing content across multiple genres and formats, including comedy, animation, live-action, children’s, documentary and multiple live concert specials. He has overseen more than $250M in production spending! He believes his dual roles as a working producer and TFS president have proven mutually beneficial to both.
