WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of video production by learning industry terminology, roles, camera equipment, lighting, audio recording, shooting and directing techniques, and more.
You will learn how story is key and the proper use of its fundamental principles in film, TV, digital media or live events.
You will be taught how to identify and analyze genre conventions, and then use these conventions in writing exercises. You will also become familiar with beat sheets and how their use can help you develop scripts.
You will learn how to create a short-form digital series. You will be tasked with creating compelling characters, developing a series treatment/bible, writing a pilot, crafting a pitch, preparing a budgeting and ways to apply for funding.
You will become versed in the various approaches to factual storytelling, including production workflows for every stage of development. You will learn how to establish story and characters, practical tips for remote production, and distribution strategies. You will also shoot your own short documentary film.
You will be guided through the process of developing, pitching and creating a factual entertainment concept. You will also learn to develop a sizzle reel for presentation purposes.
You will be trained how to tell short stories for brands, and the effectiveness of branded content versus traditional advertising. You will also study types of content creation for different digital mediums, including social media.
You will be taught the technical and creative aspects of audio recording, editing and sound mixing. You will also learn sound design as it relates to narrative demands and story structure.
You will produce several cinematic scenes so you can practice set up, blocking, shooting, and recording audio.
You will learn Adobe After Effects so you can create graphics and title sequences, and combine this imagery with existing footage. You will also learn how to use green screens and practice incorporating environmental effects (such as snow, smoke, lighting and rain) into your scenes.
You will learn visual storytelling, workflow and software, and put into practice various editing techniques to build tension and elicit emotional responses. You will also study the interplay between music and imagery as it affects pacing and rhythm.
You will learn the role of a producer and how to manage a production. You will understand best practices for interacting with other crew members, and learn to develop production contracts, budgets, schedules, distribution networks, and a sales plan.
You will learn how to build a proper demo reel and resume, and the steps necessary to pursue a career as a writer, director or producer. You will also practice writing synopses, outlines, and treatments in approved industry formats so that you can effectively pitch your ideas.
You will be taught the best practices for establishing an effective online presence. You will also learn how to create social media profiles that act as a marketing tool for your video production skills.
Working in pairs, or by yourself, you will work through the process of writing, shooting, directing, editing and marketing a five-minute film ready for the festival circuit.
